As summer slowly makes way for the crisp evenings and pumpkin flavored everything of fall, it’s time to start thinking about transitioning your wardrobe to match the changing leaves and cooler temperatures (depending where you live, of course).
Over the last year, I have really refined my wardrobe to consist of a solid capsule of staples that I wear year round, and will have for many years. It wasn’t long ago that I was going to Forever21 every time I had a new event coming up, but I’ve come to appreciate the constitution and longevity of quality clothing. I’m very satisfied that I’ve stepped out of the “trendy” fast fashion market and made more of an investment in building a lasting wardrobe. Don’t get me wrong, I will have my moment with trends, if it truly speaks to me… But my biggest piece of advice is if you’re going to invest in a trend – make sure it’s something you will get a lot of use out of this season, and that it can be integrated in with your core wardrobe.
Fall fashion is all about layering, rich textures, and embracing warm hues. I start every season by going through my closet and cleaning out things that I no longer wear and are just taking up space. It’s important to know what you have so that you can use that as the foundation of things you want to purchase as the new season approaches. For me, my fall staples include: quality denim, comfortable and simple tops for layering, several pairs of boots and other closed toed shoes, luxurious sweaters, and a couple beautiful bags complement any outfit.
Quality Denim
Look, I’ve purchased some jeans from Zara that I’ve loved… But the jeans that I reach for literally everyday are the higher quality, more expensive, well-made jeans. Unfortunately, that’s just how it goes. If you have a solid few pairs, that will get you through! I think everybody needs a pair of: a light wash, dark wash, black & a more casual jean. I’m going to include some of my personal favorites from brands I know and trust below for inspiration (clicking on them will take you to the website).
Quality Basics Tops
Before living in Northern California, I lived in Arizona – where there really was no ‘fall’… Whenever it did start to cool down, it would be chilly in the morning, and by afternoon you’d be sweating because you wore something based off of the morning weather. So this is where the importance of layering comes in, even in California it generally gets warmer during the day time until winter comes around – so let’s build out some layering options that will get us through the inconsistent weather days. Personally, I like to invest in quality basics that I can wear on repeat (as mentioned before) so here are some tops I love for a neutral base to any outfit.
Boots & Other Fall Shoe Statements
Since I tend to dress on the more neutral side, I love to have a great shoe that will elevate an outfit to a different level. Last winter, I invested in a stunning pair of knee high leather boots that absolutely changed my outfits for the better. I also discovered one of my favorite shoe brands last winter, Aeyde, their styles are incredibly timeless and elegant, and more importantly, well-made. As the cooler days approach, I will surely be rewearing those favorites – but I also plan to add some new options to my wardrobe as well which I will include below. I am enjoying the elegance of ballet flats and while I won’t be investing heavily into this trend, I think I will add a couple less expensive options into my shoe closet to experiment with how much I like them on myself. Top investments in my opinion: a great pair of knee high leather heeled boots, riding boots, and a brown and a black pair of flat ankle boots. I also tend to wear my mules more often in the cooler days of the year.
Sweaters & Knits
I’m not sure why but sweaters can be tough for me, so I’m very particular about them. I refuse to wear a cheap, scratchy polyester sweater that I can’t wait to take off – so I personally would rather invest in a beautiful and soft sweater that will last. Not to mention, usually if you invest a little bit more, they also tend to be more flattering. When shopping for sweaters (and all clothing) I encourage you to stay away from polyester & other synthetic fabrics and look for clothing that is made of natural fibers like linen, cotton or cashmere. For sweaters in particular, cotton & cashmere are your best bets! Not to mention, I’m notorious for wrapping a sweater around my shoulders probably 80% of the time. Dare I say, it’s a great accessory?
PS… Make sure you are looking at the care tag on all of your clothing before you wash them!
Handbags
Last but certainly not least, handbags! Listen, there is something about a beautiful leather or suede bag that really can bring a new textural element to any outfit. It doesn’t have to be designer, but a well-made, stunning bag is something you should invest in because in most scenarios – you can use it year round! I rounded up some simple but beautiful and eye-catching bags that I believe would be a fantastic addition to any fall wardrobe. At the very least, you can take these products as inspiration to finding your perfect bag!
I am so excited to head into this new season and take in all of the special moments that fall brings. I hope that this post helped you sort through things you may want to invest in this fall season or gave you inspiration in some way. Thank you for being here & we will chat here soon! xx
